As you know, the Board has authorized a first-ever ticket promotion in order to help us keep membership dues, as well as restaurant and bar prices at a minimum. Member “BANK” Being Implemented

At the fall membership meeting of  October 30, 2009, it was voted unanimously by those present that a member “bank” be implemented for the 2010 season. Each full golf member is required to deposit $150.00 into his or her Twaalfskill “bank” account by April 1. You can pay in installments until that date. These funds will then be used by the member in the bar and/or restaurant throughout the 2010 golf season. Once the funds in your account are exhausted, you have the option of  replenishing your account, but this is NOT required.

2010 Membership Dues Deadline Extended

2010 Membership dues were due by December 31, 2009. The late fees that, in previous years, would have been assessed are being waived until February 1. Membership dues should be paid to Andrew by January 31. Membership dues are paid at a time of year when the club’s income is at a minimum. Utilities are still due and the mortgage still has to get paid. Please ensure your membership dues are paid by January 31.

USGA Implements New Grooves Policy

What are the basics of the new groove regulations?

Although the complete technical specifications of the new groove requirements are more detailed, the following statements summarize the key changes:

• The volume of grooves is reduced.

• Groove edge sharpness is reduced for clubs with lofts greater than or equal to 25 degrees.

A common misconception is that “V” shaped grooves will be required under the new specifications and that “U” shaped grooves will no longer be allowed. This is not the case.  However, any “U” shaped groove must conform to the new specifications for both cross sectional area/spacing and edge radius.

Why were the rules changes made?

The changes are designed to reduce spin on shots played from the rough by highly skilled golfers, and thereby restore the challenge of shots played from the rough to the green. This should result in an increase in the importance of driving accuracy.

What is the effect of the new grooves on the average player?

The changes are expected to have little impact on the general golfing population for three reasons. First, USGA research shows that average golfers playing from the rough hit the green in regulation only 13 percent of the time. Second, two-thirds of golf balls sold are surlyn-covered balls which show little spin effect from different groove designs. Finally, all existing clubs that presently conform to the rules will continue to be deemed conforming through at least 2024, when the condition of competition is expected to become a permanent equipment specification. Consumer research shows that only 2 percent of irons are in use for more than 15 years.

Log on to www.usga.org for more details of these rules changes.

Rating a Golf Course According to the New York Golf Association

I was recently elected to the Sectional Affairs Committee of the New York State Golf Association. In a recent newsletter, they included valuable information regarding rating a golf course. I thought it would be interesting for all of you to know.

“As the personnel of the NYSGA rating team work their way from the tee to the green of each golf hole they measure and evaluate the following obstacles as they may influence play in both the bogey and  scratch players landing zones:

1) Topography—stance and lie; 2) Fairway—width and likeliness for keeping the ball in the fairway; 3) Green Target—green size and approaching shot distance; 4) Recoverability and Rough—playing difficulties around the green; 5) Bunkers—frequency and severity; 6) Out of Bounds/Extreme Rough—proximity to the landing zone; 7) Water Hazards—required crossings and proximity to the landing zone; 8) Trees—likeliness of coming into play and recovery from; 9) Green Surfaces—putting difficulty due to speed and contours; 10) Psychological— the combined influence of all the obstacles encountered on the golf hole.” - VM
